The Oscars 2022 will be mostly remembered for the wrong reasons, thanks to a particular “incident”. However, it still delivered in glamour and razmataz. Hollywood did what Hollywood does best. It threw the kind of glitzy awards ceremony that fairytales are made of.
While some of the dresses and suits were spectacular and the hairstyles and makeup wowed, for me, it was all about the dazzling red carpet jewellery. Let’s look at who was wearing what at the Academy Awards 2022 and find our favourite gems from the big night.
VINTAGE RED CARPET JEWELLERY
She may have been snubbed in the Best Actress category, but that didn’t stop Belfast star Caitríona Balfe from turning on the vintage Hollywood glitz. Invoking Princess Grace Kelly’s style with her Louis Vuitton gown choice, Balfe chose to accessorise with a breathtaking heritage necklace from Van Cleef & Arpels.
The diamond bow-shaped statement piece from 1957, combined with earrings, a bracelet, and a ring from the same collection, ensured this Irish actress and former model had all eyes on her.
Winning the Best Original Song for No Time To Die may have been the highlight of singer Billie Eilish’s night at the Oscars 2022. But for me, the bling the young star wore shone brightest. The singer’s fingers and ears twinkled with diamond stars, cleverly repurposed from a vintage tiara. This was not the first time these jewels had made their way down a red carpet. Actress Deepika Padukone wore them in their original setting at the Met Gala in 2017.
Removing the bejewelled stars from the tiara band and creating rings and earrings for Eilish was a work of genius, reflecting how old and new can work together to spectacular effect.
THE MEN OF THE OSCARS 2022 RED CARPET
While most men’s red carpet jewellery boiled down to exquisite, exclusive watches and rings, a few stood out with some brave bling choices.
Dune star Timothée Chalamet displayed more than just a bare chest in his sparkly sequins and lace Louis Vuitton jacket and plain trousers. His shirtless chest was the perfect backdrop for showcasing two Cartier necklaces, one of which featured a diamond, emerald and onyx panther pendant on an 18ct white gold chain.
The second, more subdued necklace was a geometric and contrast necklace made with diamonds and 18ct white gold. However, his glamorous red carpet jewellery did not stop there. He sported several dazzling rings and two matching bracelets, also by Cartier, making him the talk of tinsel town.
But the Dune star was not the only male to bring the bling. Best Supporting Actor nominee Kodi Smit-McPhee also lit up the room with his Oscars 2022 jewel choices. Crediting Chalamet as his red carpet fashion inspiration, Smit-McPhee went all out on the diamond front with a blingtastic 37mm wide 18ct white gold and diamond révélation d’Une Panthère Cartier watch as a starting point.
His Bottega Veneta suit in baby blue was enhanced further by an ethereal 18ct white gold and diamond High Jewellery necklace, matching earrings and two stunning rings, all from Cartier.
While the two young actors stole the most credit for their jewellery choices, other men attending the Oscars 2022 displayed their taste in gems in the form of lapel pins and brooches. Former Oscar-winning actor Rami Malek added a dash of glamour to his Prada tux with a white gold Cartier chain pin with onyx, diamonds, and rhodium.
While the red carpet jewellery from the Oscars 2022 was mainly modern, there were some nods to days of old in the styles worn. I enjoyed watching the parade of gorgeous gems and sublime jewellery chosen to accessorise the stunning dresses and suits.
It didn’t matter to me who won the little golden statues, as I was more fixated on how great everyone looked and the jewels, old and new, on display. The Academy Awards 2022 certainly didn’t disappoint on that score, and I went to bed dreaming of owning some of the exquisite designs worn on the night.
It also inspired me to pull together a collection of my jewels that would have rocked the red carpet in LA!

Coda won Best Picture and two other awards on the Oscars 2022 night, but its star Marlee Matlin was also a winner in the style stakes. She finished the daring look with a sparkling 1950s Van Cleef & Arpels sapphire and diamond ring, all supplied by Briony Raymond New York.

AND THE WINNER OF THE YAZJEWELS BEST LOOK AWARD GOES TO…
My personal favourite from the Oscars 2022 jewellery was a completely unconventional non-bling look by Venus Williams with her Tiffany & Co. silver arm cuffs. Williams wore Elsa Peretti bone silver cuffs, iconic creations designed in the 1970s. They are still beautifully relevant and contemporary in design and aesthetics. They are considered art jewellery or wearable art, a tag given to items that a true artist has finely crafted. Indeed, some of Peretti’s work is on display in fine art museums; such is her standing in the jewellery craft domain.
I personally love that her cuffs are making the red carpet because even though they are a vintage jewellery design, they are still very current. And, because they are crafted in silver, they are not the typical precious metal worn at such events! Venus carried them off beautifully. They worked perfectly with her stunning dress and the High Tide earrings, also by Peretti for Tiffany & Co., to create a look befitting one of the world’s greatest sportspeople.
What was your favourite look from the Oscars 2022 night? Do you agree with my choice of Venus Williams?
